A Journey Through Central India

The Chandela kings

Jhansi, in the state of Uttar Pradesh, is a part of the erstwhile area of Bundelkhand, where the local dialect is Bundelkhandi. It was once a stronghold of the Chandela kings, who constructed the famous temples of Khajuraho- some 228 kms away from Jhansi. The city is more popularly linked with the heroics of Rani Lakshmi Bai, the fiery queen who fought against the British in the 1857 revolt and sacrificed her life to the cause of Indian Independence. Her ideals and independent spirit are reflected in the image, which forms the emblem for the Conference.
